The NAWD Board of Directors consists of two representatives from each of the four Regions (Eastern, Central, Southern, Western) as defined in the NAWD Bylaws.

HARRY BETTENCOURT
(Vice President)
California
Harry served the Fremont Union School District in California as teacher, principal and Deputy Superintendent. He has extensive experience in activities as a member of the California Association of Directors of Activities (CADA) serving as its Secretary-Treasurer. He was the host advisor for the 2000 NASC Conference and continues to work annually at NASC Conferences. Harry attended his first NAWD/NCSA in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1974, the second year of NAWD’s existence.

STU SHAFFER
California
Stu Shaffer was in public education for 30 years, 20 as an Activities Director and Student Council Advisor. He is a Past President of CADA and LASC (Leadership Association of Southern California). He was named California's Activity Director of the Year, received CADA's Jack Moore Award for lifetime contribution to student activities, is a member of CADA's Hall of Fame and was honored with the national "Earl Reum Award.”  He has presented his “Capture the Spirit” program, also known as “The Traveling Junk Show”, to student leaders and their advisors nationally for over 35 years. Stu’s first NAWD conference was in 1985 in Fort Worth, Texas.

SANDY HILLMAN
Indiana

(President)

Sandy is an assistant principal at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana, the host school of the 2010 NASC Conference.  She has served as a middle school and high school principal, Guidance Counselor, Spanish teacher, student council adviser and Activities Director.  She served as the Director of the Indiana Association of Student Councils for 18 years and was their Adviser Programming Director for 13 years.  She also served on the NASC Executive Board from 2006-2009 and on the NASSCED Executive Board for four terms. She was named the NAWD Workshop Director of the Year in 2001 and hosted NAWD in 2000.   In her current position she also serves as the Director of The Early College @ Center Grove. 


TOM HEETHUIS

Michigan
Tom is a retired high school principal with extensive experience as an activities advisor. He has served as the director of the Michigan Leadership Camp program and directed a national leadership workshop for NASC. Tom conducts activity advisor workshops in both the US and Canada. He served on the Executive Board of both NASAA and NASC. Tom attended his first NAWD/NCSA in Nashville in 1988.

MIKE ROLAND

Florida
Mike serves as the Coordinator of Student Activities for Broward County Schools and also served as Executive Director of the Florida Association of Student Councils.  He was previously a Student Council advisor at both Plantation HS and South Broward HS. He hosted the 2009 NAWD-NCSA in Fort Lauderdale, and also served on the Executive Board for NASSCED from 2009-2014.  Mike attended his first NAWD/NCSA in Philadelphia in 1989.

KATIE KEYES
Texas
Katie has been a student council advisor in Texas since 1998 and is presently advisor at Boswell HS in Fort Worth, Texas. Her school was recently selected as the Texas state president’s school for the coming year. Katie has been a summer leadership workshop consultant since 2006, and state conference coordinator since 2013, dealing with state conference attendance of over 5000 delegates. Katie prides herself in seeing the “big picture”. She brings to the NAWD Board a positive and optimistic view and is excited to help continue NAWD’s growth and transformation of programs. Katie attended her first NAWD/NCSA in Minneapolis in 2007.

TERRY D'IMPERIO
New York

(Treasurer)
Terry serves as a leadership class teacher and chair of the mathematics department and student council advisor at Livonia Central School in New York.  She has been a member of the Executive Board of the NYS Council on Leadership and Student Activities and hosted several district and regional conferences for NYSCLSA.  She has been a frequent presenter at NCSA and NASC conferences. Terry attended her first NAWD/NCSA in Salt Lake City in 2011.

LOU MILLER
New Jersey
Lou has been a math teacher at Brooklawn Middle School in Parsippany, New Jersey for 30 years, and Student Activities Coordinator for 20 years. Since 2006, he has been an Executive Director for the New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC). He has served on the Executive Board of NASSCED since 2009, including two years as Vice President (2013-14) and two years as President (2015-16). He was the National Warren E. Shull Middle Level Advisor of the Year in 2010, and also served on the NASC National Advisory Council from 2010-12. A frequent presenter at NCSA and NASC National Conferences, Lou attended his first NAWD/NCSA in Minneapolis in 2007.
