EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Jim Finnemeyer, Pennsylvania

Jim Finnemeyer assumed the responsibilities of NAWD Executive Director on December 8, 2013 as Genel Hodges retired after twenty-five years of service in that role.

Jim comes from Hatfield, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, where he taught history and political science courses at North Penn High School. He began his career as a teacher and Student Council advisor in 1967 at Pennfield Junior High School. He transferred to North Penn High School when a new campus opened in 1971.  Jim was the Student Government Association advisor and later Director of Student Activities, retiring from teaching in 2002 and from the activities position in 2007. Throughout his career, Jim has been active in the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils, serving as a board member, a workshop director, and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils (PASC) for thirty-seven years.  He is now Executive Director Emeritus of PASC.

Jim first attended a NAWD Conference in 1977 at Breech Academy in Kansas City soon after being named PASC Executive Director.  There he was introduced to the amazing Dr. Earl Reum and the creative and positive atmosphere of the NAWD weekend.  Jim has been thrilled all but two of the NAWD conferences since. Beginning in 1982, Jim was joined by his wife Barrie for most NAWD weekends.  Barrie served as a National Honor Society advisor for twenty-five years and as Registrar for all PASC workshops and programs.

A “PASC team” of dedicated advisors and workshop staff members helped Pennsylvania to be the host of NAWD conferences in Washington, D.C. (1982), in Philadelphia (1989), in Pittsburgh (1998), and again in Washington, D.C. (jointly with the Maryland Association of Student Councils in 2006).  Jim’s experiences include hosting several PASC state conferences and the NASC National Conference in 2006 at North Penn High School.

Jim has been recognized for his commitment to student and advisor leadership development by being named as the 1987 NAWD Workshop Director of the Year and the Warren E. Shull National Student Council Adviser of the Year in 2001.

Barrie Finnemeyer passed away in 2017, after a long battle with illness. Jim’s family includes their sons Drew and Matt, grandchildren Niya and Zed; cats Zacky, Sasha, and Jill.
